Joseph Edwin Rowe, 80, of Downingtown, PA, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born in Ridley Park, PA, on October 20, 1944, to the late Samuel and Lois (née Neathery) Rowe, Joe’s life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his family, his strong work ethic, and his infectious love for a good story and a good laugh.
Joe will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a loyal friend whose steady presence was a source of comfort and strength to all who knew him. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth M. (née Larsen) Rowe. Their 57-year marriage was the cornerstone of his life, a love story that began when they met as teenagers at Sharon Hill High School.
Following his time at Sharon Hill High School, Joe proudly served for six years in the United States Navy as a radar technician aboard the USS Barton. This service was a foundational experience that shaped the man he would become. Joe then dedicated much of his working life to the trucking and logistics industry, where his reliability and expertise were well-regarded. Later in his career, he found a new calling as a limousine driver and chauffeur, a role that perfectly suited his engaging personality, leaving him with a treasure trove of stories from his time driving celebrities.
Of all the roles Joe held, his greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was his family. He was the deeply loved father of Joseph R. Rowe and Aimee E. Rowe (Jon Wheeler). However, his most cherished title was "PopPop”. His world lit up in the presence of his only grandchild, Elizabeth "Ellie" Wheeler, to whom he proudly declared to anyone who would listen that she was his "favorite granddaughter”. Their special bond was filled with laughter, often sparked by the endless supply of popsicle stick jokes he kept ready just for her.
Joe is also survived by his sister Judy Boyd, his brother Samuel Rowe (Vicki), and a wide circle of extended family members and friends who became family over the years. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Robert Rowe and Nancy Barrett.
A true Philadelphian at heart, Joe had a steadfast passion for his city’s sports teams. Whether it was the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, or Sixers, he was a devoted fan who was still enthusiastically talking draft picks and players’ stats in his final days. His love of gathering people together extended to his kitchen, where he was the master of the Sunday dinner, and his family will forever cherish those memories made around the table.
Joe’s warmth, humor, and unwavering love will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by those who were lucky enough to have him in their lives.
Services will be held privately at the request of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the Esophageal Cancer Awareness Association at EC Aware (https://www.ecaware.org/), the Hospice Foundation of America, or the Veterans Association of America.
