Marie was married to her loving husband Lewis for nearly 65 years before his passing in February of 2025. She is survived by three daughters, Lynda Gehris (Bill), Cindy Fogarty (Jay), and Colleen Wolfe (Eileen Hickey). She was Nanny to four grandchildren - Jennifer, Christopher, Shelby and Ryan and great granddaughters, Sanaa and Sakaani.
Marie was born and raised in her beloved town of West Conshohocken. She was the oldest of her natural siblings to include Frank “Butch”Risell, Ruthann Baumann (Darryl), who both predeceased her as well as Edward Bray (Carol). She had 5 half siblings as well.
Her Granny was very important to her throughout her childhood and she spoke about living with her and attending church events during the week and all day on Sundays.
Marie would often quote her by saying - “As granny use to say”… along with a phrase such as “if I bought a boat, the river would run dry” and “mama said there would be days like these.”
Marie and Lewis began dating while in high school and were married in 1960. They started their family and were then stationed in Lakehurst, New Jersey and the South of France while Lew served in the Navy. They returned to West Conshohocken to be closer to family and their beloved neighborhood and resided as a family of five at 222 Moir Ave for nearly 55 years. After Lewis’ death in 2025, Marie moved to Sunrise of Lafayette Hill, an Assisted Living Facility. Marie was well liked by residents and loved and cared for by staff during her time there. She was also able to continue to attend her church in Gulph Mills.
Marie was raised in the church and attended both the Primitive Methodist Church in West Conshohocken and once that closed, she attended the Gulph Christian Church in Gulf Mills. She humbly served as Sunday School Superintendent, the Dorcas Society, and she sang in the choir. She thoroughly enjoyed these roles, especially lifting her voice in praise while in the choir.
Marie’s friends were so very important to her, in fact one of them told her that she “cultivated her friendships” and worked hard to maintain them. She had attended school with many of them in Conshohocken and they became lifelong friends.
Marie and Lew were a strong partnership, despite their reputation as a couple who bickered! They worked together to provide for their daughters by purchasing buildings within West Conshohocken for Lew’s businesses. Marie worked at TV guide in data entry for decades in order to provide insurance for her family so that Lew could have his own pool businesses.
Marie loved being a mother and would tell her employer when asked why she didn’t sign up for overtime that “my children are my first job.” She was fair and loving, but would let us have it if we stepped out of line or were “fresh.” If you thought she loved her own children, her devotion to her grandchildren was next level! She became a grandmother early in life, so she had plenty of energy to run around with Jen and Chris and still a good bit for Shelby and Ryan. I’m certain they have many memories that include their Nan and Pop babysitting and attending school plays and sporting events. Marie didn’t care for sports until it came to her children, and especially her grandchildren playing. She was in your corner even if it was to point out to the coach that he should have played you more often- she was always the advocate!
Marie’s final chapter included some highs and lows, and many big changes and challenges that were not easy for her. Losing her beloved Lewis and her home was extremely hard for her. While her transition was not always graceful, she leaned on her daughters and told anyone who would listen to her what a support “her girls” were to her. She also recognized the help of friends, neighbors and staff at her living facility. Her great granddaughter was a beacon of light in this hard time as she brought a daily smile to her nans face!
She knew she was blessed while she in turn blessed others. She reaped what she had sewn and was well loved and respected by her family, friends and community. Marie Wolfe will be deeply missed by so many.
