Michael was lovingly married to his wife, Chrissy, for 36 years. They built a life full of laughter and love together, and he was endlessly proud of their three sons: Ryan, Kevin & Danielle Raffa (fiancé), and Steven, who brought him more joy than words can express.
Born in Buffalo, New York, Mike was the eldest of five children and the devoted son of Adrienne Schaefer (née Minko) and the late Ralph Schaefer. He was an extraordinary big brother to Mark, Christopher, Eric, and Julie, all of whom carry deep sadness at his passing. He also leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews whose lives he touched in countless ways.
Mike’s roots ran deep in his hometown. He attended St. Francis High School of Athol Springs before earning his degree from St. Bonaventure University, where he proudly played Division I baseball for the Bonnies. Michael was an All-conference player that still holds career batting records for batting average (.318), home runs (19), and RBIs (134).
A lifelong Buffalo Bills fan, his loyalty was unshakeable, and he planned the best tailgate parties. His smoked mac and cheese was legendary, and he loved firing up the grill at a moment's notice. He never missed a chance to strike up a conversation with fellow fans he saw wearing Bills gear and some of his happiest times were spent watching games side by side with his boys.
He loved the ocean, the sea, and the beach — places where he could breathe, laugh, and just be himself. And he loved Chrissy fiercely; she was his person, the one who matched his spirit and grounded him all at once. Their love was as familiar as the ocean tides he loved to watch.
Mike will be remembered above all for his generous spirit, his compassion, his quick wit- and ability to bring people together. He had a way of making everyone feel seen, accepted, and loved; his influence and warmth will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Private celebrations of Mike’s life will be held in Phoenixville and Buffalo at a later date.
