

Born June 9, 1922, in Palmyra, she was daughter of the late Eugene E. and Beulah (Hemperly) Behm.
Doris graduated from Palmyra High School as class Valedictorian in 1940. In her younger days, Doris was active with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and later in life she enjoyed doing volunteer work for senior citizens in both Kennett Square and Manheim and for her churches. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manheim and was instrumental in founding St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Kennett Square. Doris had worked many years for FMC as a bookkeeper and she liked reading. A literacy advocate, she also taught disadvantaged adults to read and write.
Surviving are her husband, Alton Powell; a son, David E. Powell; a daughter, Suzanne M. Young; 3 grandsons; 2 granddaughters; and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Powell would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in January 2011.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson and 2 sisters.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 18th, 2010, 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Ephrata Manor, 99 Bethany Road, Ephrata, PA 17522. Visitation will be from 1p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be private at a later date.
