Jean Ann Myers

Jean Ann Myers, 100, of York, PA, passed away on August 21, 2026 at Normandie Ridge.

Born November 7, 1925 in Freeland, PA, Jean was the daughter of the late Rev. John and Gladys Stevens and the wife of Richard F. Myers (deceased). She received a B.A. Degree from MacMurray College, an M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Penn State University and an Elementary Principal Certification from Western Maryland College.

Jean had an extensive career spanning over 50 years as a successful teacher, supervisor, principal, and adjunct professor. Her sphere of influence in the field of education was immeasurable, the highlight of which was her administration of a Title III innovations in education program that became the model for other schools. She served on many civic and community Boards of Directors, and was the Superintendent of Sunday School at her church, Asbury York UMC. She applied the Golden Rule to everything she did in her life and was beloved and admired by all.

She enjoyed traveling, attending spiritual retreats and classes, reading, gardening, attending symphonies, and singing in the choir. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, ETA Chapter, and many other professional and community organizations. She is listed in Who’s Who of Women.

Surviving are two daughters, Reba Barney (Fred) and Amy Myers; a son, Steve Myers (Gina); two grandsons; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter Karen and her brother Dr. John M. Stevens (Marjorie).

A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, October 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM, Normandie Ridge Manchester Court, 1700 Normandie Drive, York, PA 17408, with Pastor David Brinker officiating. Jean Ann Myers age 100, died at Normandie Ridge Skilled Nursing Home Friday, August 21, 2026 at 2:00 PM. She was born November 7, 1925 in Freeland, PA. the daughter of the late Rev. John and Gladys Stevens and the wife of Richard F.Myers (deceased 1995) Also preceding her death was a daughter, Karen Marie Myers 1948, her brother Dr. John M.Stevens, 2014 and his wife Marjorie 2016.

Jean is survived by her children, Reba Barney in Westerville,

Ohio (Fred) Amy Myers in Massachusetts and Steven A. Myers

in Dover, PA. with his wife, Gina. Also two grandsons, the children

of Reba: Ralph Kristopher Walkling in Arizona and Richard

Alexander Walkling with his wife, Samantha and their two children

Flynn and Skye Willow (Jean's great grandchildren) who live in

Salt Lake City, Utah. She also has many nieces and nephews.

Jean graduated from MacMurry College in 1947 with a BA degree

in Early Childhood Education. She received her M. Ed. from

Penn State University in 1963 in Elementary Education with a

Specialty in Reading. In 1971 she received an Elementary

Principal Certification from Western Maryland University.

Jean spent over 50 years of her life in various aspects of

education. In 1947-48 she taught first and second grade in

Jacksonville, III. Upon her move to PA. she directed the

Vallament Child Care Center where she implemented and

established a model kindergarten program in the Williamsport,

PA. School District, 1948-49. In 1955-57 she taught kindergarten

in the PineTree Day School in York, PA. and then first grade in

the Dover, PA. Public Schools from 1957-61.

Her interest in reading inspired her and with further study she

received her Masters Degree and certification as a reading

specialist from Penn State and became the first remedial reading

specialist in the York City School District 1961-63. In 1963 she

moved to the West York Area School District where she spent 25

years in various capacities of education. She continued to serve

as a supervisor of reading and an administrator implementing a

$75,000.00 grant that the West York Area School District

received for innovations in education. The success of the Title III

program that this great funded attracted other schools and she

and her West York administrators visited schools, attended

conventions and meetings where Jean spoke about their

program.

At the urging of her Superintendent, Jean attended Western Maryland College to earn her principal's certification in 1971. She

served as a principal to Lincolnway and Loucks Elementary School from 1970-76, became a classroom teacher again 1976-77 and then ended her public school service as a principal in the Wallace and Trimmer Elementary Schools, 1977-88. She retired in 1988. After her retirement she continued her work as an adjunct professor in the education department at York College of PA. teaching classes in Foundations of Reading and supervising student teachers, 1988-1996. Jean sincerely loved all the children and students she taught. She respected and appreciated the teachers and the care and love of the parents for their children. It was her wish for all to be kind and loving to each other. For this reason she chose "The Golden Rule" as her one school rule and the one she followed herself in all that she endeavored to do.

In 2012 Jean was awarded the Distinguished Alumnae Award

Class of 1947 in recognition of her achievements and honor that

she brought to MacMurry College

choir and being involved in her many organization and civic

groups.
