Michael, 68, was born in Harrisburg, Pa. to the late Alfred S. and Opal (Carlin) Welch.
Michael was a 1969 graduate of Central Dauphin High School. He was a proud Marine who served in Vietnam. He was a bricklayer by trade, and worked for Dininni Construction and later retired from the New Cumberland Army Depot after 25 years of service.
Michael is survived by his high school sweetheart, best friend and wife of 46 years, Peggy; his loving daughter, Stephanie and his beautiful granddaughter, Emma Layne. He is also survived by brothers, Gerald (Sandy) and Alfred Jr.; sisters, Penelope (Norman) and Sharon; sister-in-law, Barbara; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends whom he considered family. Michael is predeceased by brother, James, and sisters, Kathleen and Vickie.
Michael loved life and enjoyed sharing outdoor adventures with family and friends. Some of our best times were spent at camp or RVing. Kayaking became our favorite pastime Spring, Summer and Fall. Michael was a member of the Hemlock Lodge where he made many life-long hunting comrades and became a “master scrapple maker”.
Michael was a life member of the Halifax Ginter-Koppenheffer VFW Post 5750 and was very proud when he accomplished “All State Commander”. He was also a member of the American Legion and the National Rifle Association.
The family would like to thank the Lebanon VA, Homeland Hospice, Jay Diaz and his respiratory team at Anchor Enterprises, ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia and the entire ALS team at Hershey Medical Center. The support we received from all these organizations was beyond amazing. Words alone cannot express our gratitude for their dedication and care for Michael over the past 6 months.
Memorial contributions can be made to: ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia, 321 Norristown Rd., Suite 260, Ambler, Pa 19002 or Homeland Hospice, 2300 Vartan Way, Suite 270, Harrisburg, Pa, 17110.
