William H. “Bill” Long, Jr., 69, of Hershey, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, Thursday, March 14, at home.
Born March 1, 1955, in Harrisburg, he was the son of Sarah (Manum) Long and the late William H. Long, Sr.
Bill graduated from Central Dauphin East in 1973. He then served honorably in the United States Marine Corps. He worked in the coach industry for forty years, starting at Capitol Trailways, and eventually retiring from Bieber Transportation Group. Bill was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. A member of Harrisburg Hunters and Anglers, he enjoyed target shooting and making his own ammunition. He was a gifted artist and leather worker who was generous with the paintings and holsters he produced. He loved family vacations at the beach and was always at home on the water. He was an outstanding athlete in his younger years and continued his love for sports as a fan of Penn State football, the Steelers, and Phillies baseball. Bill was an animal lover who always had a dog or a cat (sometimes both) and he became very attached to his pets. He was also quite handy and could fix almost anything.
In addition to his mother, Sarah, he is survived by his one true love, his wife of 47 years, Sandra “Sandy” (Stabinski) Long; two loving daughters, Veronika Long and her husband Michael Brown, and Valerie (Long) Huber and her husband, Caleb; and two beloved grandchildren, Everett Huber and Magdalena Huber. He is also survived by two sisters, Roxanne (Long) Schortemeyer and Deanna Long. He will be especially missed by uncle Roy Manum, cousin Coleen Manum, and nephew Antonio Stabinski, as well as by his many other relatives and friends.
Bill was a devoted husband and a family man who loved being a dad to his daughters and a father-in-law to their husbands. He really enjoyed his role as a grandfather, known as “Bop” or “Boppy”, to his grandchildren, Everett and Magdalena. He was a kind, honest and brave man who was deeply loved by his family and friends and who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service for Bill will be held at the convenience of the family.
