Mrs. Ardeth Glarner Merrell

“Ardie”, as she was known by all, is survived by Richard (Dick) Merrell her loving husband of 63 years. She is also survived by her three sons; Richard, his wife Cheryl, (children Richard, Madison); Andrew, his wife Judy (children Alexander, Blaise, Gabriel); and Jeffrey, his wife Kristen, (children Jon, Andrew).

Born Ardeth Ann Glarner in Dimock, PA, the only child to Willard and Ethel Glarner (deceased), her family moved to Upper Darby, Pennsylvania in 1942 when Ardie was 4 years old. She was graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1956 and went on to earn her undergraduate degree in English with a minor in History from West Chester State Teachers College (now West Chester University). Her early teaching career was spent at Richardson Park School District in Delaware and Lansdowne-Alden School District in Pennsylvania. She left the teaching profession in 1965 to start a family and raise her three children. She returned to teaching in 1981 as a long-term substitute teacher for Great Valley, Downingtown, and West Chester Area School Districts where she worked until 1991.

Ardie spent her later years with Dick hunting in Pennsylvania, throughout the United States, and all over the world. Trips to South Africa, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and many parts of Europe highlighted their time together as both hunters and tourists. Ardie formed lasting friendships through her membership at her local church, Locust Lake Village, and other organizations like Safari Club International Sables. These friendships were near and dear to her heart. All her friends and family remember Ardie as a great conversationalist – including those “lucky” enough to sit next to her on a plane.

A memorial service to celebrate Ardie’s life was held Friday, November 8th at Faith Lutheran Church in Pocono Lake, Pennsylvania. Donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association.
